Chapter 12

The town hall was packed with standing room only. Betty Sue sat on one end of a makeshift stage with a couple other bigwigs from town. Max Worthington sat at the other end, glancing at his watch every few seconds. Barb Norton stood at the podium, trying to get the crowd to settle down.

Jenny sat between Heather and Molly in the first row. Jason and Star were in a row behind them.

“This is a waste of time,” she grumbled. “I would rather work on my sundae recipe.”

“Hush,” Heather said, poking her with an elbow. “Barb has some announcement. This is going to be good.”

“Probably something controversial,” Molly laughed.

“More like idiotic,” Star said from behind them. “As if she doesn’t have enough on her plate already.”

“Wonder what Max Worthington is doing here,” Jenny mused. “I have never seen him at these meetings before.”

“He’s too high and mighty for town hall meetings,” Star supplied. “The Worthingtons think they are better than the Newburys. I say they are both crooks.”

The Newburys were one of the wealthiest families in town, rumored to have built their fortune from sunken treasure.

“I guess they both got rich off the Isabella,” Jenny spoke out loud, referring to the ship that had sunk in the shoals around the island.

“But the Worthingtons look down on the Newburys,” Star told her.

“I can’t keep track of this island politics,” Jenny muttered. “I think it’s silly.”

The crowd went quiet just then and Jenny’s words rang out in the silence. Every pair of eyes in the room turned toward her.

Barb Norton banged her gavel before the crowd could erupt again.

“Welcome to this special meeting,” Barb spoke loudly into the microphone. “I am sure you are all excited about the spring festival.”

A few snide remarks were made, eliciting a few laughs from the audience. Barb glared at the crowd, making eye contact with the people who had dared to laugh at her.

“I have an action plan for making the spring festival bigger and better,” Barb intoned. “But we have another item on the agenda before we talk about that.”

Max Worthington stood up and came forward.

Barb continued. “As some of you may know, the Worthington family lost their daughter recently in a tragic accident.”

A hush fell over the audience.

“Her father, Max Worthington, is here to announce a scholarship in her name.”

Max Worthington cleared his throat. He kept his words brief. The Worthington family would sponsor one student’s entire college education each year. A board of trustees would decide who the scholarship would be awarded to. Eligibility criteria would be disclosed later.

Max didn’t wait for the applause to die down. He stepped off the stage and walked out of the room with a heavy gait, looking like a man carrying a big burden. Jenny felt sorry for him.

Barb was banging her gavel again.

“I am proposing Pelican Cove’s first film festival,” she said. “It can run along with the spring festival or the week before it. This will help us attract more tourists to the town, giving a big boost to business.
